Requirements: Competence in the ceramic arts and a desire to become a full time ceramic artist.
Taos Clay offers two full time residencies to emerging clay artist wishing to be in an environment where they can develop a body of work, while marketing and selling their work. Residents will have the opportunity to teach and take part in nationally recognized workshops. Residents will also have the opportunity to earn money managing the studio, selling their work, and teaching classes. Residents have a genuine commitment to working with clay, a willingness to work with the local community, and a desire to grow in the development of their own work. They bring a high level of professionalism and competency to the studio that enriches the quality of our programs and facility. Taos Clay offers all the components of a ceramic studio with a specialty in atmospheric firing to help Resident Artists reach the next stage of development in their careers.
What Taos Clay offers to its Residents:
- Monthly stipend clay and firing costs
- Private studio with twenty-four hour access to both private and main studio
- Paid teaching position with opportunity to design specific classes every 3 months
- Minimum 10 paid hours per month to manage studio
- Representation of work in gallery at 80% commission
- Entitlement to any commissions during residency
- A comprehensive show the last month of residency marketed regionally and nationally
- A spot on Taos Artist Studio Tour
- Enrollment in all summer workshops
- 20% commissions on sale of other gallery artists work
- The opportunity to live and work in an inspiring and artistic place with abundant opportunities to recreate in the outdoors
- Help documenting residents body of work and researching shows and galleries to continue career
- An understanding of the business aspects of running a community clay studio and gallery
- Proficiency in using Adobe Photoshop, Constant Contact,and other computer based resources as a tool for promotion and marketing
- Opportunity to re-apply
Obligations of Resident:
$300/month plus deposit for private studio
Management of the gallery on a weekly basis.
Monetary responsibility for damage incurred to kilns or equipment through out residency.
Help in studio when needed, this might include cleaning, pugging clay, marketing and publicity of classes and workshops, and the firing of student work.
